Join us for Shabbat services on April 25th as we honor Sylvia Jacobson and Avi Friedman.
Sylvia and Avi used to live on the same block as Mishkan Torah. When their eldest daughter Ella was born in 2022, Avi would walk into Saturday morning services with baby Ella and stay for just a few minutes until she got too loud. But even in those few minutes everyone was always so welcoming, and he kept coming back! Sylvia and Avi joined Mishkan Torah that year, happy to find a Jewish spiritual home for their family. Inspired by an idea from fellow congregant Aviva Glaser, Avi and Sylvia organized a Wednesday biweekly young families meet up. Sylvia and Avi have also been involved in a lot of the young family activities, including intergenerational Shabbat and have led children's Yom Kippur services. Sylvia and Avi have two daughters, Ella (3.5) and Wrenna (1). They both grew up in Maryland and met as camp counselors at Habonim Dror Camp Moshava. Avi is a mechanical engineer at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and Sylvia is currently a PhD student at the University of Maryland in Environmental Science.
