At
Mishkan Torah, where it is always Purim, the Ways and Means Committee
will usher in the 2012 Purim Season by presenting a revised
revival of the 1987 hit “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to
the Purim or The Villain Punished.” The show will be presented on
Saturday evening, March 3, 2012 at 7:30 . The show is a musical
retelling of the Purim story, featuring a score which is taken
from Broadway, opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, and good old rock
‘n’ roll. The show features such hits as “We Jews Don’t
Bow!” and “We’re Going to the Gallows and We’re Going to Hang
Haman!.” The show features over a dozen musical numbers,
including several additions to the 1987 production. The gala evening
will also feature the Passover Wine sale, light refreshments, and
other surprises in the Mishkan Torah tradition. It will be an
unforgettable night for all ages!
Real
life fiancés Ben Greenfield and Rachel White will star as the royal
couple King Ahasuerus and Queen Esther. Dave Herschler will
direct the show. Evil villainy will come in the detestable shape of
that despicable perfect picture of a potentate prime minister,
Haman. You will have a full opportunity to boo and hiss that man
you love to hate! The other Purim characters such as the noble
Mordechai and harridan Queen Vashti will also be there, along
with assorted characters such as Royal Chamberlains, doo-whopping
plotters, Miss Upper Lower Turkestan, and Lady Debita, the Lord High
Royal Auditor. You won’t want to miss it!
The show is now over. The cast put on a marvelous performance and a great time was had all. Eriz Zhang has posted a marvelous write-up of the spiel, complete with pictures and some audio recordings on his blog.
