Presentation on Avoiding Scams                                                       
On Oct. 10, 2014, the Adult Education Committee is sponsoring its second presentation of the year on “Avoiding Scams, Con Games and Fraud” at 10:30 am.  The speaker will be George Mathews of the Greenbelt Police Department.  He will address issues such as being alert to scams by mail, by phone, and online, and what to do if you have been taken in by a scam.  There will be handouts and time for questions.  The event is free and open to the general community.Light refreshments will be available for  purchase at the Coffee Klatch starting at 10:00.

George Mathews is the Public Information Specialist and the Community Liaison for the Greenbelt Police Department.  He was a police officer for 25 years, the last 23 with the Greenbelt Police Department, where he was a Patrol Officer, Crime Prevention and Community Relations Officer, Press Information Officer and a DARE Officer.  After retiring from the Department, George worked as a Crime Prevention Specialist with the Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute (MCCPI) from 2009 to 2013.  George was recognized as Officer of the Year with the Hyattsville City Police Department in 1985;Prince George’s County Community Services Officer of the Year in 2004; and was awarded the Sam Walker Lifetime Achievement Award as the Maryland State DARE Officer of the Year in 2007.  George is married and has two daughters, Hanna 14 and Taylor 15.
